Mission
Jawbone's mission is to develop and maintain a competitive and elite Cleveland-based Ultimate Frisbee program. In doing so, Jawbone will continually utilize its resources to recruit local athletes that would improve the future of Cleveland ultimate while maintaining a highly competitive and spirited team for current competition.
History
In June of 2003, nine members of the Cleveland Ultimate community came together to discuss the future of Ultimate in the region. The members came from many teams and various levels of experience, yet all with the same intention - develop and maintain a competitive and elite Cleveland based Open Ultimate Frisbee program. This team came to be known as Jawbone. Because of the various talent levels and individual backgrounds, the leadership had the task of harnessing and focusing Jawbone’s energy. Therefore, with cooperation, dedication and belief from each individual the transition into an elite team had begun. During a pivotal game in a tournament in Washington D.C., the hard work of all came to fruition. During the contest, Jawbone rallied behind the play and energy of each other. Each player became more energized and motivated by the play of their teammates. Although the game ended in a one-point loss, Jawbone made it clear that they would not go away and that Cleveland ultimate was once again on course to becoming a national force. By season’s end, it had been demonstrated that the concept of a competitive Cleveland team was more than something to aim for, but a reality! In its first year, Jawbone won the East Plains Section. The bright future of Cleveland Open Ultimate was also displayed by Mandible, Cleveland’s second team, who also finished near the top. Jawbone has developed a system of offense and a tenacious defense that has become the fabric of the team and a part of its future. Each year the team’s leadership assesses the strengths and opportunities for growth. In return, each individual commits all that they have to achieve those goals so that they may make Jawbone a continuous threat. The presence of Jawbone has once again made it an exciting time to be an ultimate player in Cleveland.
The name Jawbone comes from the name of the Cuyahoga River. Cuyahoga was named by the Senaca Indians, and does not mean "Crooked River" as most people believe. Cuyahoga actually means "Place of the Jawbone". The Mohawk Indians called it the Cayagaga, which does mean "Crooked River". Jawbone has an slang definition that members of the team may find funny:
v. Slang jaw·boned, jaw·bon·ing, jaw·bones
v. tr. - To try to influence or pressure through strong persuasion, especially to urge to comply voluntarily.
v. intr. - To urge voluntary compliance with official wishes or guidelines. Check it out on dictionary.com
